your cv (curriculum vitae)

The more carefully composed and informative your CV is, the greater your chances when applying for a job. Your CV is your first contact with the employer, and will determine whether or not you are considered for an interview. So it’s well worth taking care over it.

The main rule is: only mention useful information, in a concise, efficient manner. A few other points:

make it fit
a new cv for every business
Some employers only look at your training and experience, while others try to use your CV to work out whether you’re creative, full of initiative, independent or whatever. So it certainly does no harm to adapt your CV in the light of the business you’re applying to. For instance, by spotlighting particular items of work experience or talents.

what should a good cv include?
five key sections

1. Personal details
Briefly tell the employer who you are, how old you are, where you live and what your family situation is (e.g. married, 2 children)

2. Education
What did you study, when and where? Put your most recent education first. It may make sense to position the studies or the courses that are most relevant to the job centrally. Don’t forget further training, either. Particularly if it provides evidence of extra interest in a specific area.

3. Experience
Where have you worked, and in what position? This is how you can show what you’ve already learnt in any previous jobs, or what experiences you have had which may help ensure your success in the function you’re applying for. Put your most recent experience first. Mention work experience schemes and projects too. Make sure everything fits together properly, and don’t skate over the less pleasant moments, such as repeat years, dismissals or periods of unemployment.

4. Other skills
This is the place to mention things such as languages, computer skills, driving licence and special skills such as management, PLC control, etc.

5. Miscellaneous
Interesting hobbies, involvement in clubs and societies and other skills. This section offers the most opportunity for improvisation. Be sure to phrase it concisely.
